(Book Review): The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee
(Disclaimer: This will contain spoiler!)
‘The Gentleman’s
Guide to Vice and Virtue’ tells the story of Lord Henry Montague aka Monty and
the shenanigans that followed (that he brought upon himself btw) during his
Grand Tour of Europe.
He is accompanied
by a chaperone, Lockwood; his best friend, Percy who is also having his Grand
Tour (and whom Monty happens to be in love with); and his sister Felicity, whom
they need to drop off at a European finishing school (though we would later
find out that she actually wants to go to a real school and study medicine).
During that tour,
Monty goes and steal something really important from someone really really important, and that results in
them getting ambushed by bandits and having to run all over Europe trying to
escape this manhunt.
We will get more
and more acquainted with the other characters, namely Felicity (who is easily
the best character in the book) and sweet Percy (who turns out to be really ill). Monty himself can be so exasperating and selfish
(and not in a cute way.) He can be so
oblivious and self-centered at times, and he was basically the one who got them
all into trouble on the first place. Basically,
the premise of the story is this: Monty creates trouble, Felicity solves it,
Percy helps, rinse and repeat. But then
again, he has his own troubles. Imagine
being gay and having an abusive (and hypocritical!) father in 18th
century Europe. And when he is not busy
basking in self pity, he can be pretty hilarious and snarky, which makes for a
very entertaining read.
I thoroughly
enjoyed this novel. I have been looking
high and low for the second novel, because Felicity TT, alas, luck is not on my
side. Easily, one of the best novels I’ve read so far. This is a good month for
me, I have been reading only the good ones :D
