"At this point, G realized he'd just asked a ferret what the dog said."

'My Lady Jane' tells the story of Lady Jane Grey; whom, by some twist of fate (or the machinations of a certain hook-nosed someone) somehow has the crown falls on her lap after her distant cousin, King Edward died (spoiler alert: no, not really :D).  This is set in a kind of alternate universe England where there are Edians, people who can transform themselves into animals.

The story is told from multiple perspectives, namely Jane's, Gifford's and Edward's.  Jane is a bookworm who mostly brings bad luck to anyone she is betrothed to.  Enter Gifford Dudley aka G, the second son of the Duke of Northumberland, who is possibly the second most powerful man in the kingdom at the time.  Edward, believing that he is dying of tuberculosis, arranged a match for the two, intending to make their future male heir the king of England.

This is a hilarious take on the tragic figure that is Lady Jane Grey!  All three main characters are hilarious (though I almost punched Edward multiple times for his misogynistic comments!).  I pretty much devoured the book with how fast I was going.  There is not a dull moment, I swear.  This reminds me of 'A Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue' because of the sass, except that it is told from multiple POVs instead of just one.

Jane Grey (or is it Jane Dudley now) is so loveable.  We actually have a smart AND funny female protagonist for once.  The story is already good to begin with, and it only gets better once Jane discovered her Edian form.
I had a great time reading this.

Verdict: 5/5 (Hall of Famer)
