[Book Haul]: November-December Haul
November-December Gigantic
Haul: 62 Books!
Why do I feel like I start all my haul posts
with 'had a huge haul coming recently'?
That's bad, isn't it? December is my birth month, so I have been buying books as gifts..... for myself :D These are
the collective haul that I have after the last haul post.
Less than 10% of them are new, most are
second hand.
Let's start this off with the books that
are not from the two big boxes shall we?
:D
A couple of these, I bought during a sale
in a local bookstore. Popular (the name
of the bookstore) is currently having a 20% sale off every books they have in
their selection, which obviously did not bode well for my poor poor
wallet. The rest were second hand books
that I bought from various platforms online!
I already read a couple of these actually, namely 'An Enchantment of
Ravens', 'A Court of Mist and Fury', 'A Court of Wings and Ruins', 'Carry On', ‘To
Kill a Kingdom’ and am currently reading 'Wintersong' by S. Jae Jones.
1. Lisey's Story by Stephen King.
Summary: Lisey Landon lost her
husband Scott two years ago, after a twenty-five-year marriage of profound,
sometimes frightening intimacy. Scott was a celebrated, award-winning,
novelist. And a complex man. Lisey knew there was a dark place where her
husband ventured to face his demons. Boo'ya Moon is what Scott called it; a
realm that both terrified and healed him, that could eat him alive or give him
the ideas he needed to write and live. Now, it's Lisey's turn to face her
husband's demons. And what begins as a widow's effort to sort through her
husband's effects, becomes a perilous journey into the heart of darkness
Thoughts:
I am already a couple of pages in, like 30 pages in, but I don't know if
I can continue reading. The premise
looks so promising but the plot is very confusing for me. I will probably read this later, once my mind
is ready for it.
2. Rose Madder by Stephen King
Summary: Roused by a single drop of
blood, Rosie Daniels wakes up to the chilling realisation that her husband is
going to kill her. And she takes flight - with his credit card.
Alone in a strange city, Rosie begins to build
a new life: she meets Bill Steiner and she finds an odd junk shop painting,
'Rose Madder', which strangely seems to want her as much as she wants it.
But it's hard for Rosie not to keep looking
over her shoulder. Rose-maddened and on the rampage, Norman is a corrupt cop
with a dog's instinct for tracking people. And he's getting close. Rosie can
feel just how close he's getting...
3. Different Seasons by Stephen King
Summary: Different Seasons is a
collection of four Stephen King novellas with a more serious dramatic bent than
the horror fiction for which King is famous. The four novellas are tied
together via subtitles that relate to each of the four seasons.
4.
The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory

novel written by British author Philippa Gregory, loosely based on the life of

5. 延禧攻略 (The Story of Yan Xi Palace)
Summary: During the 6th year of the
Qian Long's reign, Wei Ying Luo finds her way to the Forbidden City as a palace
maid to investigate the truth behind her older sister's death.
Thoughts:
I bought this from Popular because I looove the drama. There is actually a little difference between
the book and the drama, at least from the early chapters that I've read anyway.

8.
Circe by Madeline Miller
Summary: In the house of Helios, god
of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a
strange child—not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her
mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that
she does possess power—the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into
monsters and menace the gods themselves.
Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted
island, where she hones her occult craft, tames wild beasts and crosses paths
with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology, including the
Minotaur, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus, the murderous Medea, and, of
course, wily Odysseus.
But there is danger, too, for a woman who
stands alone, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods,
ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and
vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most, Circe must summon
all her strength and choose, once and for all, whether she belongs with the
gods she is born from, or the mortals she has come to love.
Thoughts: Oh my God, so I've been
looking for this book for like forever. So glad I found it! Once I finish (or drop) Wintersong, I will
read this next!
9. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
Summary: “It may be unfair, but what
happens in a few days, sometimes even a single day, can change the course of a
whole lifetime."
Amir is the son of a wealthy Kabul
merchant, a member of the ruling caste of Pashtuns. Hassan, his servant and
constant companion, is a Hazara, a despised and impoverished caste. Their
uncommon bond is torn by Amir's choice to abandon his friend amidst the
increasing ethnic, religious, and political tensions of the dying years of the
Afghan monarchy, wrenching them far apart. But so strong is the bond between

10. An Enchantment of Ravens by Margeret Rogerson
Summary: A skilled painter must stand
up to the ancient power of the faerie courts—even as she falls in love with a
faerie prince—in this gorgeous debut novel.
Isobel is a prodigy portrait artist with a
dangerous set of clients: the sinister fair folk, immortal creatures who cannot
bake bread, weave cloth, or put a pen to paper without crumbling to dust. They
crave human Craft with a terrible thirst, and Isobel’s paintings are highly
prized. But when she receives her first royal patron—Rook, the autumn
prince—she makes a terrible mistake. She paints mortal sorrow in his eyes—a
weakness that could cost him his life.
Furious and devastated, Rook spirits her
away to the autumnlands to stand trial for her crime. Waylaid by the Wild
Hunt’s ghostly hounds, the tainted influence of the Alder King, and hideous
monsters risen from barrow mounds, Isobel and Rook depend on one another for
survival. Their alliance blossoms into trust, then love—and that love violates
the fair folks’ ruthless laws. Now both of their lives are forfeit, unless
Isobel can use her skill as an artist to fight the fairy courts. Because
secretly, her Craft represents a threat the fair folk have never faced in all
the millennia of their unchanging lives: for the first time, her portraits have
the power to make them feel.
Thoughts: I saw this book on sale in
Popular the other day but didn't buy it.
Keep niggling at the back of my head ever since cause the summary (and
the cover) intrigued me. When Popular
had (still has actually)another sale, I looked for it again, but couldn't find
it. Asked the Popular staffs to help me
locate it. They couldn't. And then, I came back another day and found
it in a completely different shelf. Who
put it there? I did, the first time
around. I was debating whether or not I
should buy it and then left it there when I decided I shouldn't. Blessing in
disguise (at least for me tbh) because, it was the only copy left. Someone else probably would have bought it
had it been on the right shelf. Oops

Summary: From the author of
Hemingway’s Girl comes a richly imagined tale of Zelda Fitzgerald’s love,

From New York to Paris, Scott and Zelda
Fitzgerald reigned as king and queen of the Jazz Age, but those who really knew
them saw their inner turmoil.

to forge an identity independent of her famous husband. She discovers a
sympathetic ear in her nurse Anna Howard, who finds herself drawn into the

higher price than she ever intended.

Thoughts: This was in Popular's
bargain section :D

Thoughts: So I have been meaning to
try to read historical romance lately. These are just so cheap that I could not
let these pass! The books are thick, so
I think they will have more plot than Mills and Boonses. Some of their covers are, needless to say,
very interesting :O

Thoughts: So, as you guys can see, this is the Anne Rice collection. I haven't read any of her books, though I
already own Interview with the Vampire, but I've heard marvelous things about
them. Anne Rice, like Stephen King and

51. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
Summary: Discover this first
installment of the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series and
“prepare to be hooked” (Entertainment Weekly).
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out
to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a
murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange
tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin
air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone
else and when there is nothing -- not even a smear of blood -- to show that a
boy has died. Or was he a boy?
This is Clary's first meeting with the
Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her
first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and
acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's
world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is
attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes
like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The
Shadowhunters would like to know...
Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly
gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a
wild ride that they will never want to end.
Thoughts: I already read this one. It was alright imo, but would love to read
more to find what the hype is all about.
I mean, I am all to giving series second chances now. A Court of Thorns and Roses was just a little
above average for me, nothing special, and I thank myself everyday that I
decided to pick up A Court of Mist and Fury despite my somewhat indifference to
the first book.

the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon,
who's becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn't ready to
let her go—especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And
Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter
Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil—and also her father.
To complicate matters, someone in New York
City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings—and if
he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the
Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and

56. City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare
Summary: In this mind-bending
exploration of traditional Christianity, firebrand Peter Rollins turns the
tables on conventional wisdom, offering a fresh perspective focused on a life
filled with love.
Peter Rollins knows one magic trick—now,
make sure you watch closely. It has three parts: the Pledge, the Turn, and the
Prestige. In Divine Magician, each part comes into play as he explores a
radical view of interacting with the world in love.
Rollins argues that the Christian event,
reenacted in the Eucharist, is indeed a type of magic trick, one that is echoed
in the great vanishing acts performed by magicians throughout the ages. In this
trick, a divine object is presented to us (the Pledge), disappears (the Turn),
and then returns (the Prestige). But just as the returned object in a classic
vanishing act is not really the same object—but another that looks the same—so
this book argues that the return of God is not simply the return of what was
initially presented, but rather a radical way of interacting with the world. In
an effort to unearth the power of Christianity, Rollins uses this framework to
explain the mystery of faith that has been lost on the church. In the same vein
as Rob Bell’s bestseller Love Wins, this book pushes the boundaries of
theology, presenting a stirring vision at the forefront of re-imagined modern
Christianity.
As a dynamic speaker as he is in writing,
Rollins examines traditional religious notions from a revolutionary and
refreshingly original perspective. At the heart of his message is a life lived
through profound love. Just perhaps, says Rollins, the radical message found in
Christianity might be one that the church can show allegiance to.
Thoughts: This series is very high up
my TBR!
