(Book Review): 'The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency' by Alexander McCall Smith

"He died shortly after her thirty-fourth birthday, and that was the point at which Precious Ramotswe, now parentless, veteran of a nightmare marriage, and mother, for a brief and lovely five days, became the first lady private detective in Botswana."

This book tells the story of Precious Ramotswe, the owner of the number 1 and perhaps the only (at that time anyway :D) female-owned detective agency in Botswana.  This book criss-crossed between cases (the disappearance of a man, the case of a philandering husband, the kidnapping of a young boy and many more), and is interlaid with Precious' inner monologue and the story of her past.

This is a short book and one that you would want to pick up when you are in the mood for something light (though there are parts that will clench your heart, especially when she is recounting her past.)  It has an interesting premise, but is kind of monotonous for me.

Some of cases are pretty meh (the philanderer lol), but some are pretty interesting too (I aspire to be as sly as young Miss Patel!)

All in all, good for a short read!

Verdict: 3/5
